The Early Years

Baseball first arrived in Colorado Springs in the 1880s, when miners and railroad workers brought the game with them from the East. The city's first organized baseball team was the Colorado Springs Pioneers, who played their home games at a field near the current site of the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum.

In 1898, the Pioneers joined the Western League, a minor league that included teams from Denver, Omaha, and Sioux City. The Pioneers were a competitive team, winning the league championship in 1902 and 1904.

Municipal Stadium

In 1928, Colorado Springs built Municipal Stadium, a new ballpark that would become the home of the Pioneers for the next 40 years. The stadium was a state-of-the-art facility for its time, with a capacity of 10,000 fans.

The Pioneers played their first game at Municipal Stadium on May 1, 1928. The stadium quickly became a popular destination for baseball fans, and it hosted numerous memorable games over the years.

The departure of the Pioneers left a void in the Colorado Springs baseball community. But the city's love of baseball remained strong, and a new era of baseball was about to begin.

    The Sky Sox

In 1988, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox were founded as a member of the Pacific Coast League. The Sky Sox played their home games at Security Service Field, a new ballpark that was built on the site of the old Municipal Stadium.

The Sky Sox quickly became a popular team in Colorado Springs. They won the PCL championship in 1995 and 2016, and they have consistently drawn large crowds to their games.
