Exterior Of The Tabernacle, With Its Intricate Curtains And Golden Roof The Mystery Of The Tabernacle

A Glimpse into the Tabernacle's Architecture

The Tabernacle was a portable sanctuary that accompanied the Israelites during their wanderings in the wilderness. Its design was meticulously detailed in the book of Exodus, chapter 25-31. The structure consisted of three main components:

  • The Outer Court: An open area enclosed by a curtain-covered fence, serving as the entry point to the Tabernacle.
  • The Holy Place: A rectangular chamber, containing the golden lampstand, table of showbread, and altar of incense.
  • The Most Holy Place: The innermost chamber, separated by a thick veil, housing the Ark of the Covenant.

Each element of the Tabernacle's architecture held profound symbolic and theological significance. The outer court represented the world outside God's presence, while the Holy Place symbolized the human realm. The Most Holy Place, accessible only to the high priest once a year, represented the very presence of God.

The Sacred Objects of the Tabernacle

Within the Tabernacle lay sacred objects of great significance:

  • The Ark of the Covenant: A gold-covered chest, containing the two stone tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments, representing God's presence and covenant with Israel.
  • The Golden Lampstand: Seven-branched, symbolizing the tree of life and the continuous presence of God's light.
  • The Table of Showbread: Covered with pure gold, displaying twelve loaves of bread representing the twelve tribes of Israel.
  • The Altar of Incense: Where fragrant incense was burned, symbolizing intercessory prayer and the sweet-smelling aroma of Christ's sacrifice.

The Priestly Ministry in the Tabernacle

Priests Offering Sacrifices In The Tabernacle The Mystery Of The Tabernacle

The Tabernacle served as the center of worship and sacrifice for the Israelites. A designated priesthood was ordained to carry out the sacred rituals.

The high priest, the most senior of the priests, was responsible for entering the Most Holy Place on the Day of Atonement, making an offering for the sins of the people.

The other priests performed various tasks, including offering sacrifices, maintaining the Tabernacle, and instructing the people in God's law.

The Tabernacle as a Symbol of Christ

Beyond its historical significance, the Tabernacle holds profound typological meaning that points to Jesus Christ.

The Ark of the Covenant, representing God's presence, foreshadows Christ as the incarnate Word of God who dwelt among us.

The golden lampstand, symbolizing the light of God, represents the illumination Christ brings to a darkened world.

The table of showbread, representing the sustenance of God's people, points to Christ as the Bread of Life who provides spiritual nourishment.

The altar of incense, symbolizing intercessory prayer, foreshadows Christ as the great High Priest who intercedes for His people before the Father.

The Mystery Revealed

The Mystery of the Tabernacle unfolds in its intricate symbolism, pointing to the coming of Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of God's plan of redemption.

By studying this ancient sanctuary, we gain a deeper understanding of God's character, His relationship with His people, and the ultimate sacrifice of His Son.
